What the sacral chakra governs
The sacral chakra, just below the navel and close to the groin, is associated with physical complaints such as urinary infections, lower-back pain and sexual difficulties. Emotionally it is linked to self-worth, pleasure, sexuality and creativity. It sits above the sexual organs at the level of the pelvic bone and is linked to the water element; it is connected to the tongue and the sense of taste. Blood, fat, urine, saliva, mucus and lymph are made of water. The water element's qualities are cleanliness and attachment and its nature is calm; when it dominates in the body, the wish to communicate and the ability to work peacefully emerge. This chakra is linked to the planet Jupiter and to the signs Sagittarius and Pisces; its yantra is a crescent and the principle it stands for is polarity. The energies of creativity, sexuality and desire vibrate in orange. Through this chakra a person learns to see themselves as worthy and, with confidence in their creativity, to approach others openly and warmly. Through it they become flexible, disciplined, responsible, generous, natural, cheerful and creative.
Signs it is out of balance
You have difficulty communicating what you feel, become over-sensitive to what is said about you, feel worthless and cannot bring out your creativity. Physically the classic complaints are: weight gain, urinary infections, lower-back pain and sexual difficulties.
Working with it
The traditional approach combines posture work, breathing, meditation and stones: chalcedony and coral are the crystals most often used for the sacral chakra. None of this replaces medical treatment - it sits alongside it.
